The American Mock Trial Association
Was founded in 1985 by Dean Richard Calkins of Drake Law School. AMTA serves as the governing body for intercollegiate mock
trial competition. Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, students develop critical thinking and
public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of legal practices and procedures. AMTA sponsors regional and national-level competitions, as well
as providing interesting and complex case materials for academic use. AMTA also sponsors mediation simulation tournaments.
To join AMTA and register for either Mock Trial or Mediation, please use the links under the Registration menu. For more information, contact the AMTA office at the address and phone number located at the bottom of this page.
The Request for Proposals to host AMTA Regional Tournaments is now available on the Regionals page.
Continuing hosts will be notified if they need to submit a new proposal.
Prospective hosts should follow the directions in the RFP.

It it with great sadness AMTA reports the death of Gene Reifsnider on March 30, 2008. Mr. Reifsnider was a proud alum of Drake Law School. Dick Calkins, AMTA’s long-time president, was the Dean of the Drake Law School in the mid-1980s, and when AMTA was but a thought in the mind of Dean Calkins, he turned to Mr. Reifsnider, to float the idea of an undergraduate mock trial association. Reifsnider was enthusiastic about AMTA, and along with Dan Stamatelos, another Drake alum, the trio founded AMTA. Over the years, Reifsnider was the consummate AMTA cheerleader and supporter. He judged every year, recruited members of the Iowa Bar to judge, earned a spot in AMTA’s Judges’ Hall of Fame, and provided generous financial support to AMTA. These financial contributions were especially critical during AMTA’s formative years. One of the traveling trophies for the national tournament has been named in his honor. His commitment to AMTA continues even in death as he asked that memorials be designated to AMTA.
Condolences may be sent to

The civil case committee will accept at this time submissions for consideration and use for the 2008-2009 AMTA season.
Following discussions at the 2007 Board Meeting, our committee wishes to encourage submission of a wide variety of legal issues for consideration. Suggestions include contract disputes, trademark or copyright issues, and any variety of probate or juvenile (custody or other family law) matters. We will also welcome the traditional tort submissions that have been popular in past years, but encourage authors to be creative in their choice of legal problem as well as with witness options and exhibits.
To facilitate communication between authors and our committee we would like all submissions to be turned in by November 30, 2007, to allow feedback from the committee. Revised cases can be submitted by January 31, 2008. The 2008-2009 case will be selected by April 30, 2008 and will be revised and posted by August 15, 2008. The writer of the chosen case will be awarded $500.
Please submit your case to the committee via Daniel E. Haughey, Esq., Chair, at 121 W. High St. Oxford, OH 45056 and at haugheylaw@gmail.com.
Please feel free to contact Daniel Haughey, Chair, at the above addresses or by phone at 513-524-5000, with any questions or concerns.

At the recent board meeting, AMTA made the decision to designate one person annually to serve as an ombudsperson. The ombudsperson's responsibilities are to file, track, and respond to concerns and suggestions related to AMTA. The ombudsperson will make a record of the inquiries and comments that are made directly to the ombudsperson as well as those that are raised to other AMTA officials. The goals of this process are to provide a voice to the AMTA membership, become more aware of the issues facing the institution, direct issues to the appropriate board members or committee and promote positive change.
Barry Langford of Columbia College has been selected to serve as the ombudsperson for the 2007-08 season. If you have any questions, comments or concerns for the ombudsperson you can contact him in the following ways:
