Who we are
The AMTA is governed, organized and run by its Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for all aspects of the AMTA tournament structure, case materials, rules, and generally maintaing the American Mock Trial Association. All members of the Board of Directors are volunteers. Members of the AMTA Board of Directors are not compensated in any way for their time as it relates to fulfilling their duties as a member of the Board.
The Board of Directors meets annually during July to review all policies, rules and consider motions to change and update policies and rules. In addition to the annual meeting, the Board of Directors holds a mid-year telephone conference meeting in December. Prior to each meeting, agendas will be published here for public review. Following each meeting of the Board, minutes of the meetings will also be published here for public review.
Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of legal practices and procedures. AMTA sponsors regional and national-level competitions, as well as providing interesting and complex case materials for academic use.

What We Do
We bring the courtroom to life for college students across the country. Through structured competitions, students step into the roles of attorneys and witnesses, learning to analyze evidence, craft arguments, and think on their feet.
American Mock Trial Association runs a nationwide network of tournaments from regional rounds to the National Championship providing fair, structured, and educational competition. Beyond tournaments, we offer case materials, training resources, and mentorship to help students at every experience level grow their skills.
By participating, students build confidence, sharpen critical thinking, and develop leadership skills that extend far beyond the competition.
How the Tournament Works
Our competition format is built to mirror actual courtroom strategy while fostering fairness and educational value. Each tournament is structured in rounds: teams alternate between prosecution/plaintiff and defense roles, present witness examinations and opening/closing arguments, and are evaluated by panels of judges using scoring criteria. Top teams from regional tournaments advance to the Opening Round Championship Series and ultimately the National Championship. Our clear rule-set and transparent process ensure that each match is a meaningful educational experience and a thrilling contest.
